Backyard Renovations: Hardscape, Then Plants, Then Furniture

Backyards extend the usable square footage of a home at a fraction of indoor renovation cost, but they reward planning more than they reward enthusiasm. The order that works: hardscape first, plantings second, furniture last. A patio or deck is the foundation; everything else arranges itself around it. Composite decking has surpassed pressure-treated wood as the default choice for new construction because the maintenance gap pays for the price gap inside seven years.

An outdoor kitchen does not need to be elaborate; a counter, a grill, and a sink connected to a hose-bibb cover almost every entertaining scenario without the expense of a built-in appliance package. Fence height drives perceived privacy more than landscaping does; six-foot privacy fence with horizontal slats reads as architectural rather than utilitarian. Landscaping is the slowest variable in any backyard project; mature plantings cannot be bought, only waited for, so plant earlier than you think you should.
